[Original title] BORSALINO

Set in Marseille in the 1930s, this film depicts the rise of two men bound by friendship in the underworld.

On the other hand, Belmondo beautifully sprinkles his good nature at the core in his trickster-like demeanor. The smile he shows to Rocco's mother, played by Laura Adani, when Rocco visits their newly built house perfectly represents François' kindness. The final scene in which François says goodbye to Rocco. Compared to Rocco, who does not hide his loneliness, François' dry atmosphere is good. The contrast between his serious expression, in which he steps aside before getting into a fight with his friend, and his light expression when he decides to decide by coin toss afterwards. When he decides that he is a cheat, he seems to have given up somewhere. While Rocco is straightforward in his pursuit of his own success, Francois is somehow awake. When he cheats the final coin toss, Francois thinks for a moment. In that moment, he convinces himself again that he will step aside. Rocco's gentle gaze, who knows all of this, is also good. His expression is clearly softer than when he is dealing with his enemies, Poli and Marrero. I personally did not expect the sudden turn of events that followed. I was watching the movie hoping that the good relationship between the two would continue, so I was completely blown away by the lingering impression. I also liked how it ended smoothly without any unnecessary dragging.

It has a feeling that is clearly different from Hollywood movies and Japanese movies, and personally I am not very familiar with many European movies, but this one was easy to understand and I enjoyed it very much. The details, such as how the alibi is created when killing Marrero at the casino, are also well-crafted. Even though it's a success story right up until the very end, there's a sense of uncertainty somewhere in it, which is typical of France. And the beauty of the colors, for example in the scene where Rinaldi announces his candidacy for mayor, is outstanding. It's hard to believe it was made over 50 years ago, and I enjoyed it all the way to the end.
