Rumor has it that OMDS will announce the OM-5 in September. And it seems that the image sensor will be the same as the OM-1. The OM-1 uses a back-illuminated stacked 4/3-inch CMOS (LiveMOS) image sensor with approximately 20 million pixels. This is thought to be the same type of image sensor as the IMX472-AAJK that Sony is selling. The readout speed is 120 frames per second, which allows for the 120fps "Pro Capture" function. If the OM-5 uses the same image sensor, we can expect great things from its continuous shooting and pro capture performance. However, since there is no point in making it the same as the OM-1, it is likely that they will adopt a strategy of downgrading to reduce costs. As for what will be downgraded, first of all, the dust-proof and water-resistant body will be made dust-proof and water-resistant. On top of that, it seems likely that they will continue the small and lightweight line of the OM-D E-M5 MarkIII. Also, if they do downgrade, they will probably reduce the buffer memory and lower the number of continuous shots possible. Another possibility is that the resolution of the EVF may be downgraded from approximately 5.76 million dots on the OM-1 to approximately 3.69 million dots. However, functions such as Live ND, Live Composite (comparative brightness composition), and depth composition will likely be inherited as they are. The video function is also likely to remain 4K/60p. However, the recording media may be changed from the OM-1's SD UHS-II double slot to a single slot for compact size. Looking at it this way, we can see that the relationship is similar to that between the OM-D E-M1 Mark II and the OM-D E-M5 Mark III. However, rumors are that the OM-5 is not a successor to the E-M5 Mark III, so we would like to expect some kind of surprise (including the price). Currently using the OM-D E-M5 Mark III, I am paying close attention to the arrival of this OM-5.

JPEG taken straight out. The subject is backlit, but the AF focused instantly with the telephoto zoom. This camera and lens combination provides an angle of view equivalent to 150-600mm in 35mm format, but is very small and lightweight. Photographed in July 2021. Olympus OM-D E-M5 MarkIII, M 75-300mm F4.8-6.7II, aperture F8, 1/500 second, AWB, ISO auto.
